The Integrated Habitat Design Competition, launched at Ecobuild, aims to inspire and reward designs where bees, hedgehogs -- and all of us -- will feel at home. The competition is for designs that respect and enhance biodiversity and the other ecosystem services that keep us alive and healthy.
All kinds of projects are eligible, and the judges will be looking at a very comprehensive range of criteria, from biodiversity and habitats, through social and economic sustainability, to energy and water management.
The competition, run by the design training charity RESET in partnership with livingroofs.org, is now open for registration, and the final deadline for submitting entries will be June 30th 2010. The AECB will be part of the judging panel, and the winners will be announced in September.
According to the organisers:
• Submissions can be for any built environment design project in an urban, suburban or rural location, of any size, anywhere in the UK
• Designs can be for new-builds, retro-fits, open spaces, public spaces, transitional-spaces, residential, commercial, mixed-use, brown-field etc
• Submissions must take into account each of the Design Criteria (Ecosystem Services, Biodiversity, Water, Energy & low-carbon, Livability, Economics)
• As a guiding principle: a bee should never be further than 20 metres from a food source within the site and a hedgehog should be able to cross the scheme in safety.
• Submissions can be made by anyone - individuals or teams of up to 7 people
