GSHP for 70 House Development
« on: December 05, 2007, 12:42:35 PM »
I have read very little about district GSHP. I am writing a renewables report for a client who's at the planning stage of a large development in NI. There are two football pitches and a car park adjacent to the site, not to mention a river beyond, so everything points to horizontal pipes.

But can these houses share pipes and a big pump (and also whatever alternate boiler that may be required) or is it better to install a seperate system each?

If anyone could put me in touch with a GSHP installer in NI who could handle something of this scale that would also be useful.

Regards

Search for Powergen on Google.
Also look for Penwith housing project, but there are several others, as installed by GeoScience.
These are single house, singe borehole system designed for multiple housing projects.

I think that you will find that one big unit is not the best option for heat pumps.

For anything concerning district heating, you should contact William Orchard, Director of Orchard Partners London Ltd. (AECB member and occasional contributor to this forum). He's *the* UK expert.

Personally I wonder why a system this size isn't using CHP, as the CO2 emissions are lower than from a GSHP.

No CO2, they have their own water turbines on site which produce over 3000MWh/yr, and the other, larger, mixed-use wing of the site will be CHP... Just an exercise in evaluating their options really, and trying to bend them towards AECB Silver at the very least (see how much you'll save!!)...

So it's not grid-connected?

If it's grid-connected,  the most effective (cost and CO2 saving) is likely to be to export the hydroelectricity to benefit the rest of us and heat using CHP.
