Replacement parts for imported windows
« on: October 21, 2009, 05:27:07 PM »
Does anyone know where the former Swedish Window Co. Ltd. (Earls Colne, Essex) got their composite aluminium-clad timber windows made? These were not a standard wood window - there's almost more aluminium in them than wood - but the architects insisted on them. I take it that they saved a tiny amount versus more conventional (and desirable) wood windows with aluminium cladding.

One unfortunate user of this product (Herefordshire) has had the plastic hinge caps perish since the windows were installed only 8-9 years ago. The innards of the hinge are left exposed. Not good at all. I've volunteered to ask on his behalf on a few forums whether anyone else has had this problem (and ideally managed to solve it).

The SWC doesn't answer its phone and does appear to be totally out of business. The ex-MD's father still operates a company next door (making precast concrete floors). I've no idea if he'd feel under a moral obligation to help.

Got to be worth a try

Think they were buying from Traryd Fonster (future windows) in Sweden.  From memory, Sean Millbank ran the SWC, and his father owns and operates the much larger concrete beam company, Millbank Holdings Ltd.  I think Sean went off to be a ski instructor (not that this bit of info helps!).  I would be surprised if you get any joy but who knows.

If you can't source the original parts, would it be possible to make replicas? Take one that's still in good condition, make a silicone mould from it and cast the replicas in resin, perhaps?

SWC sourced 3G all-wood windows and huge 3G 2-track sliders for me about 2003; they were from Hajom, who were dragged down and went bust when SWC went bust about 2005. Hajom were bought by the v large Elit window group (who also swallowed Swedhouse UK), which is bad news as Elit seem to be quite useless. You can still google for Hajom who continue to make the sliders - which are actually quite ordinary once you've bought the G-U hardware - but seem rude and reluctant to respond to business that's offered them on a plate!

Don't know about the mainly-Al windows, but the description sounds like those supplied by Russell Timbertech. Russell are spectacularly cheapest for all-wood but uncompetitive for Al-faced.
