They are currently looking for building surveyors who would be happy to undertake and write up short reports on energy saving opportunities in community buildings.

As a committed environmental charity, they are looking for people with strong green ideals, who really want to see their work resulting in carbon and cost savings in these community buildings, rather than profit driven companies. For further information please contact Jerome Baddley on jerome.b@nottenergy.com.

Three years of experience with thermographic imaging and airtesting on all kinds of buildings have led AECB member Paul Buckingham to the depressing conclusion that almost without exception, buildings in this country are shoddily assembled and fail to meet the standards set. What is worse, the prevailing ethos seems not to be ‘how well can we build?’, but ‘how quickly and cheaply can we get these boxes ticked?’ In the latest AECB soapbox, Paul shares some of his horror stories, and calls for an enforcement regime which delivers real, as opposed to imaginary, construction standards.

The Ecology Building Society have launched an updated C-Change sustainable homes scheme, offering interest rate discounts of up to 1.25% on mortgages for homes that meet recognised energy standards. The new scheme gives pride of place to homes built using the Passivhaus method – an internationally recognised standard for low energy buildings.

The C-Change sustainable homes discounts include the new EnerPHit standard, which has been developed for retrofits (energy efficient refurbishments) using Passivhaus principles. The Society has also increased its maximum loan-to-value on residential and shared ownership properties to 90%, to enable it to support more people to build, buy or renovate sustainably.

The launch comes at a time of increasing concern over high energy costs and fuel poverty, with the government’s Green Deal scheme seeking to incentivise homeowners to increase the energy efficiency of their properties. C-Change sustainable homes also offers discounts for properties achieving an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of B or above, EcoHomes Very Good or Excellent, Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 and above, and AECB Silver and Gold.

You can find out more about C-Change sustainable homes here.

G&S Energy thermal imaging services include equipment condition monitoring, solar photovoltaicinspections and commercial and residential building surveys.

Tooly and Foster Partnership’s carbon neutral development of 16 houses and 12 flats at New Cranes Court in Basildon, for Swan Housing Group, has picked up its third sustainability award, the Sustain Award 2013 for Development; following on from its success in 2012 with Green Apple and Sustainable Housing awards. The judges said of the scheme, “A very strong scheme. Taking it at face value, the average person wouldn’t think it was Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 – which is exactly the point. Architecture with a sense of place – and sustainability – deeply embedded.”

The New Cranes Court dwellings are very comfortable to live in and whilst calculated differently, their very low energy performance is equivalent to the German Passivhaus standard.

Tooley and Foster Partnership are now offering their Passivhaus services under the Accredited Passivhaus Design trading name. The website www.accreditedpassivhausdesign.com offers a useful resource for Passivhaus design and demystifies the Passivhaus process. The office is currently working on 2 Passivhaus projects – a private house in Oxfordshire which is currently in planning and 93 Extra Care flats for a Housing Association which is pre-construction. Certified Passivhaus Designer Peter Ranken was extremely encouraged by the interest shown in Accredited Passivhaus Design at Ecobuild.
