The AECB CarbonLite retrofit online course is open for new bookings. Students who book onto the course will immediately gain access to the course materials. Most students will aim to complete the course in twelve months but the course is flexible for those who need longer.

The webinar tutorials the AECB run compliment the course but are optional and open to all AECB members. These can be booked at a cost of £25.00 plus VAT.

As these tutorials are optional, students can achieve CLR certification before (or without) attending web tutorials, if they wish. All webinars are ran by AECB CLR tutors.

The CarbonLite Retrofit Training Course is an online course, aimed at construction professionals and those whose role involves decision making around retrofit.  The course brings together a wealth of knowledge on low energy building retrofit  and methodology. To get the most out of taking the full course you will already have good professional knowledge within the construction sector.  You will have a serious interest in how to do advanced energy efficient retrofit and be wanting to deepen your understanding of building physics and the risks associated with measures, to enable you to make informed decisions.

Homeowners with a desire to drive their own retrofit projects will also find this course useful. While only the more technically minded will be interested in all the detail, there is much useful knowledge even for those who are less technical.

Earn 35 Passivhaus Institut (PHI) credit points on successful completion of course

The Passivhaus Institute have agreed that delegates passing the course will be allocated 35 credit points on receiving their certificate. This will be useful to Passivhaus designers/consultants looking to renew and in terms of cost, it is very competitively priced option compared to other Passivhaus CPD events.

    Course Approach

    • Read and follow modules at your leisure, to fit around work and other commitments
    • There is an online test at the end of most lessons to check your learning
    • Communicate with fellow students and the module tutor to discuss learning or to post questions arising from the material on the dedicated on-line forum.
    • For each of the core modules there will be a homework task based on projects that the tutors have worked on themselves (but anonymised) to cover specific retrofit challenges.  This will be reviewed via the optional on-line webinar where tutors and students can discuss these projects.
    • Currently being finalised – the right to self-certify projects under the CarbonLite Retrofit Self-Certification system

    Course Tutors


    Andy Simmonds has been working on this material for the last three years and brings together his experience as a low energy building designer with research into moisture and energy issues. Andy’s own house was the first certified (and monitored) domestic EnerPHit retrofit in the UK.
    Eric Parks is an experienced Passivhaus architect and building physics trainer on the CarbonLite Certified Passivhaus Designer course, he has co-written a number of the sections of this material.
    Bill Butcher is an experienced Passivhaus builder, with years of low energy building retrofit experience. Bill is a trainer on the Construction Module of the Carbonlite Certified Passivhaus Designer course and a Certified Passivhaus Consultant and Tradesperson.
    Dr Tina Holt trained as an earth scientist with particular focus on the causes and impacts of climate change. She has worked in education, IT and editing technical information for a broader audience. In 2011-12 she retrofitted her own home close to the EnerPHit standard and consults on domestic energy efficiency.
    Alan Clarke is one of the UK’s most knowledgeable energy consultants and building services engineers, specialising in Passivhaus design, building on long experience of low energy and ecological construction.  His Passivhaus projects include individual and group housing, schools, community centres and offices.  In addition to design work he is involved in detailed monitoring of several of these projects which are now completed and occupied, learning invaluable lessons about the real life performance of low energy buildings.
    Tim Martel is a freelance Chartered Architectural Technologist and Passivhaus Designer with a background in calculations through commercial R&D.  He uses BIM with Simmonds.Mills Architects and others in new build and retrofit projects and is at the forefront of the AECB’s retrofit research in moisture monitoring/hygrothermal behaviour and economics. Tim reads widely to expand knowledge of these areas.  He uses computer programming in AECB spreadsheets to overcome the calculational challenges in moisture monitoring and economics for the Carbonlite Retrofit course.

    Course requirements

    • You will need to be an AECB member so please join here prior to booking the course.  
    • The course can be booked and started at any time. The proposed 12 month time span allows for prior commitments like holidays and full time work.  Some students will need more time, some less. Everyone has the option to extend access over 12 months for an annual fee of £50 + VAT.
    • All material is presented on-line so a reasonable internet connection is required.

    • Access to a speaker and microphone may be useful to join webinars (but are not normally essential if your computer has a reasonable speaker and microphone built in).
