How to select a good lime for the retrofit and conservation of historic buildings – Dr Giovanni Pesce
In retrofitting and conservation projects, mortar porosity is one of the main characteristics that should be carefully tailored since this, in turn, affects the mechanical properties (e.g. compressive strength), adhesion, moisture transfer, and durability (e.g. freeze/thaw and salt transport) of the mortars. Mortar porosity is affected by several factors (e.g. water to binder ratio, aggregate size), including the type of lime used in the mix.
Selection of the correct type of lime for specific applications (e.g. renders, core mortars, floors) is therefore essential but it is often hindered by the overwhelming number of lime-based products available in the market and the general little knowledge of the regulations governing the commercialisation of lime.
This webinar will provide an overview of the standard designations of lime (e.g. CL, NHL, etc.) and of the characteristics of the various types of lime included in the standard EN BS 459-1. By providing the basic information necessary to understand the labels printed on the bags and buckets of lime you then will be able to specify lime products more appropriately.
