Heat Without CO₂ – The All Electric House?

March 19, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

How can we heat our buildings and still achieve the UK’s recent legal commitment to achieve net-zero CO₂ emissions by 2050?

A new version of the Building Regulations is to be released later this year, and will push to accelerate decarbonising heat, Is this curtains for the gas boiler?

In 2018, UK homes consumed more energy in the form of natural gas (for heating and hot water) than the country’s total COMBINED electrical energy generation from wind, solar, hydroelectric, and nuclear.

Getting to zero by 2050 will require the UK to REDUCE domestic GAS USE by 28 million kWh (energy equivalent to 18,000 barrels of oil) PER DAY, EVERY DAY for the next 30 YEARS!

UK households typically pay 4p per kWh for gas and 15p per kWh for electricity.

Sounds tricky.  Is this achievable?  Without being cripplingly expensive?

The three speakers will talk about:

  1. Overview of the problem, the main tools we have to solve it, and how advanced heating control software which is reactive to what’s going on both inside and outside the building will be almost essential to achieve the goal.

Tim Small – Co-organiser of Brighton AECB local group which meets second Tuesday of the month in the Battle of Trafalgar pub.

Tim is a software developer and Building Physics consultant.  With a keen interest in both building simulations, and control software, Tim has 25 years experience in programming, including stints in Silicon Valley, and at CERN.  He lives in Brighton, his house has previously been part of “Brighton Eco Open Houses”.

In the past, Tim has failed to correct staff at his local builder’s merchant when they assumed he was a chippy (because he’d get less favourable quotes in future).  He doesn’t feel entirely comfortable talking about himself in the third person.

  1. Heat pumps – heat your house using cold air, water, rock or earth. Yes, you really can, and most of us probably will.

Darren Johnson, Managing Director of Air Craft (Southern) Ltd.

Darren is an active participant in the HVAC industry and a keen exponent of sustainable and low carbon design. He is also an Associate Member of CIBSE, The Ground Source Heat Pump Association and The National Custom and Self-Build Association. Darren has been a regular contributor to the trade media and presenter at conferences, seminars and CPD events.

His career began in Aerospace Engineering and he has been involved with Renewable Energy systems for over 15 years.

He lives in Dorset and bases his business activities at the National Self-Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon. Darren is also the founder and Managing Director at Air Craft, offering renewable energy and indoor air comfort systems and designs to architects, developers and self-builders.

  1. Phase-change materials (“heat batteries”) for short term heat storage.

Toby Morris from Sunamp will be our third speaker.

Sunamp delivers thermal energy storage to homes, businesses and communities around the world.

Sunamp’s super-compact “Heat Battery” technology is designed to provide a clean, efficient and cost-effective thermal energy storage solution.
