About the building . . .
The thermal design is based on the Passive House Planning Package, but the house has not been built to be certified as a Passive House. In addition to insulation in all the usual places, the external walls are heavily insulated and the windows are triple glazed. The construction is solid masonry, to provide thermal mass.
No central heating is installed; space heating comes from a log burner that also provides hot water. A novel feature is the inclusion of an earth tube, bringing fresh air into the house via an underground tube to take advantage of temperature stability through the seasons.
Lesley & Ian moved in November 2011 and have now had nearly a year in the house. They’ll concentrate on what they’ve learnt in that time, and what they would do differently (which is surprisingly little).
Future Cheshire, Shropshire & Staffordshire Group dates for your Diary 4th December 2012 & 5th February 2013
