The AECB Building Standard – AECB Expert Advisor Mark Siddall

October 21 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

In the current policy vacuum, many questions have been raised about the future of sustainable construction. Despite this uncertainty, there is a steady growth of interest in the AECB Building Standard.

In the right hands, compared to the way the industry currently works, the AECB Building Standard can be used to dramatically improve design and construction practice. The standard was designed for new buildings but has recently been used successfully to improve existing ones. It can also deliver significant benefits in occupant’s health and well-being, thermal comfort, good air quality and of course, lower energy bills.

The AECB Building Standard can be used as a certifiable, coherent and cost-effective first step on the learning curve towards implementing the Passivhaus standard. It is considered a sensible building standard in its own right, by reference to government standards abroad, such as Canada’s R-2000 or Switzerland’s MINERGIE. Or it can be a backstop standard for projects aiming at Passivhaus, but just falling short because of an unexpected design or construction situation.

As a technical advisor for the AECB Building Standard Mark will make a short presentation about the standard, dispel a few myths and then address your questions to help you get started.

Mark Siddall

Architect, Passivhaus Consultant and Building Performance Consultant

Before becoming an architect, Mark Siddall worked as a labourer on building sites, as an estimator for a house builder and as an architectural technologist.

The North East’s most experienced Passivhaus architect, he is director of architecture at Durham based LEAP, the Lovingly Engineered Architectural Practice and co-author of twelve peer reviewed journal and conference papers and four Passivhaus design guides.

He is Chair of the RIBA North East Sustainable Futures Forum, a trustee of the Association for Environment Conscious Building and a technical advisor for the Passivhaus Trust.

When he is not designing, researching, or spending time with his wife Jen and 6-year-old daughter Hannah, you’ll find him helping architects, engineers and trades close performance gaps through training and consultation events.
