The AECB Three Counties Group – Visit to Solar House

This solar house is largely a synthesis, based on research, experience and practice in other countries, particularly USA, Canada, Sweden and Denmark where ‘superinsulation’ began 40 years ago. (Passive solar began in the USA long before that.) Plus learning from more recent experience in some mainland European countries including Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
It is a model for new housing in the open countryside, typified by sites with no mains services except water, electricity and telephone. Many such plots are developed by self-builders or farmers, not by ‘volume developers’ or social landlords. This house gained planning permission as a replacement dwelling.
Extra measures have been added over and above the usual ‘eco house’. They should help achieve negative net CO2 emissions. (Misinformation on this topic is widespread.)
A book on the project, The Energy Showcase: Story of a Solar House, will be published later in 2016. The book’s emphasis is on helping others to learn from the experiences of this project. It includes for instance a ‘warts and all’ discussion of the construction process.
The owner and architect are considering presenting a paper to the Conference on Zero Carbon Buildings to be held at Birmingham City University in September 2016.
