        An interesting study in Hemp Lime Construction. Another nail in the coffin for cavity wall construction?

        The hemp was imported for these case studies, it is now being grown in the UK for another manufacturer using generically similar hemp lime technologies.

        There is a conference investigating the use of hemp and lime as a building material at CAT on 28th April. organised by the students and staff on the MSc Architecture course.

        The conference will be looking into the low embodied energy timber frame construction using Hemp and a binder as an insulation in the form of a monolithic non weight bearing in-fill wall. The main energy cost for the walls is the lime in the binder, and therefore Stafford Holmes is looking into ways to reduce the lime content or produce enough lime from local sources in the UK and Tom Morton will be expanding on his experience of using light earth and straw.

        The issues of growing hemp in the UK will be looked into including the fiancial potential for the organic farmer. Pat Borer and Phil Horton will expand on the use of hemp and Lime in the WISE building and Ian Pritchett will outline the commericial considerations. Hopefully it will be a very informative day.

        Speakers;

        Stafford Holmes (Building with Lime (ITDG)
        John Garland (ADAS, Co wrote the DEFRA Hemp and flax report)
        Bodil Pallerson (Danish Agriculture Hemp and Flax Advisor)
        Pat Borer (WISE Architect, WHole House book)
        Phil Horton
        Tom Morton (Light Earth and clay building expert)
        Ian Pritchett (Limetec)
        Henry D O'Thompson (Old Builders)
        Ralph Carpenter (Haverhill Housing Project Architect)

        Full details will be on the CAT website shortly, tickets are £20 from courses at CAT. This includes a meal I think and accomodation at CAT would be available.
