Since the use of one of these is highly advisable, in parallel with the MVHR system (having its own filters), to remove the worst of the smoke and grease before it enters the ventilation ducts, has anyone found any published data on how much elec. all brands and models consume in relation to their airflow?
I've found limited numbers for specific models suggesting the specific fanpower varies by more than 3x from worst to best but nothing resembling a comprehensive list. But it's a fair amount of electricity if a household does a “healthy” amount of cooking starting from fresh food, it could even be 20% of what the main MVHR system consumes if that is highly elec-efficient.
On a separate point, most of them use two halogen downlighters, if not worse (incandescent downlighters are worse) which are a fairly obvious candidate for replacing by two 2-3 W LEDs although not before replacing all the ones in the ceilings, which are on for even longer hours.

Hi David,
I've not come acorss any studies in particular. What have you found so far? (Which models have you looked at, and how didthey perform?)ATB,

It's another area where behaviour is going to count for a lot more than specifications, I think. If people fry a lot of food, they're likely to use it a lot more than if they steam, boil or even grill. And if as children their mother used to use one, I expect it will be switched on out of habit.
Perhaps we will all need compulsory culinary 're-education' in the cause of energy saving as well as our health. Or perhaps the CSH will come to include limits on the size of chip pans in carbon neutral homes.
But more seriously, I second Mark's request for any performance figures that have been found.

I'm also in the market for a hood, also interested in noise and effectivness as well as electric use.

I'm just about to order my Berbel, but I did recently find the following sites which do custom hoods:
http://www.westin.co.uk/index.html
http://www.cookerhoodsforyou.co.uk/
Might be useful for someone.
