The link below contains a PDF with a picture of part of a downpipe and drain at my home which is a new-build apartment, timber framed with brick cladding. The arrangement has been designed without a shoe on the downpipe.

Does anyone have any ideas about what the benefits and disadvantages of a shoe-less design might be, in terms of construction, performance and future maintenance? Note that the damp proof membrane for the building runs horizontally between the orange and black bricks.

          Hi Ben

I have a similar downpipe on my 12 year old extension. Whether coincidentally or not the adjacent and nearby render is disintegrating and pieces even falling in the drain. I thought I’d finish this course before deciding what to do about it!
