Company philosophy"Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work". Aristotle,330 B.C. "We haven't learnt much in the last 2000 years, have we?" Iain McCaig,2005 A.D.(wearing blue hat on left). This is a small business with the director working on site.The on site operatives are both male and female, cover a wide age range, and are all sympathetic with environment conscious and conservation building. Our ideal projects allow us to combine the soul quality and artistic freedom of traditional craftsmanship with the thermal performance of an energy efficient modern building. Mike first worked on a carefully designed energy efficient building in 1996, and since then has been on a steadily improving journey. In 2007 we started using the Passive House zero thermal bridge detailing where possible on our jobs. In 2010 we started an extension and renovation that had been designed to PH principles using PHPP to achieve 30 kwh/m2/yr. In 2011 we started the first new build certified Passive House in Herefordshire. Mike's intention in the future is to only build to Passive House principles.
Environmental PolicyEnvironmental Policy 1. Ensure that all main employees and regular subcontractors are genuinely committed to, and sympathise with, the company policy. 2. Work within 25 miles of our base at Garway Hill, Herefordshire. 3. Use home-grown sawn timber and locally sourced materials wherever possible. Develop and maintain supply lines with local companies providing ecologically sound products and sevices, both to support their businesses and benefit from their specialist knowledge. 4. Use recycled/reclaimed materials where possible and practical. 5. Avoid using tropical timber and plywood. Raise awareness with suppliers of the need for certification of timber products. 6. Build to high standards of insulation and airtightness and carry out airtightness testing when practical. Continually develop techniques and detailing to raise these standards. 7. Encourage clients to install renewable energy systems and to use energy and water conservation measures. 8. All waste to be separated into the following categories:- metal and plastic for recycling, cardboard for recycling/composting, timber for re-use or fuel for woodburners, rubble for hard-core. Landfill to be kept to a minimum.

aims Rebuild and conversion of two barns of approx 320m2 owned by Duchy of Cornwall into offices for sustainable architects Architype.This project won the national Royal Institute of British Architects Sustainability Award 2007, for the building that most elegantly and durably demonstrates the principles of sustainable architecture.

aims Oak internal frame with floor beams and 3 upper crucks.External envelope masonite I beams.The idea was to build a house with the feel and soul quality of an old house and the performance of an energy efficient modern house.
measures Locally grown oak.Warmcell insulation (200mm walls and 300mm roof)with minimal cold bridging.Solid insulated floor slab and masonry internal walls on ground floor for thermal mass.Reclaimed roof tiles.Ecoplus windows and doors.Solar hot water panels and Clearview woodburner heating thermal store, with excess going to underfloor heating. Microbore pipes from manifold to distribute hot water.Ifo low flush w.c.s.Rainwater collection tank to supply commercial herb garden.South facing conservatory.Passive ventilation from wet areas.Careful airtightness detailing to inside and outside of frame.Electrisave electricity monitoring.Low energy lighting throughout.
