Company philosophyTandem aims to create innovative and personalised environments and furniture which are both contemporary and environmentally conscious.
Materials SourcingTandem design and manufacture a range of furniture products as well as undertake one-off commissions. For the solid wood furniture we specify local FSC hardwoods which are finished in the Osmo range of finishes which are non-toxic and vegetable oil based.
The range of plywood furniture uses FSC or PEFC birch plywood which is machined using the latest CNC technology for speed and accuracy. All the furniture is designed to last a long time with no composite construction allowing the materials to be separated for reuse, recycling or disposal as non toxic biodegradeable waste. Focussing on locally produced wooden furniture that is sold predominantly in the South West minimises the embodied energy in the products and is ethically sound (not exploiting developing countries to produce goods for the West)
Energy EfficiencyWe undertake interior design work of an architectural nature, generally reconfiguring existing spaces to maximise their potential and to respond to changing lifestyles. We advise on upgrading thermal insulation and give clients basic information on renewable energy technologies. We specify A-rated condensing boilers low flush wc's, low energy lighting and appliances. All timber based products are specified as FSC or PEFC. We aim to undertake commissions that are as local as possible for an improved quality of life and to reduce our use of the car.
Reducing the environmental footprint of the businessThe studio is in a converted corner shop where we also live. The building has been fully refurbished by ourselves. The majority of the solid external walls have been dry lined with insulated plasterboard. Low energy light bulbs and fittings have been used throughout and our boiler has been upgraded to a top of the range A rated condensing boiler. Low flush mechanisms have been fitted to both our WC's
The furniture workshop is based near Gunnislake and is easily commutable by train and bike from Plymouth. The space is fully insulated with minimal space heating requirements.
