Scope of Work

We offer a bespoke service : our projects range from small house extensions to individual houses to larger community and commercial buildings

Company philosophy

Wonderful architecture combines inspiration and delight with purpose and practicality: it encompasses every aspect of buildings and people and their place in the world from the best views – inside and out – to the most comfortable door handle and the most effective plumbing. More than the other arts, it makes explicit and tangible the values accorded and relationships held between individuals and society: it extends from the most public of realms to the most intimate details of our lives. It also relates to a high proportion of our individual and social economy: good architecture makes us all richer in every sense – whereas failure in architecture can both depress us and cost us dear.

Environmental Policy

At Hetreed Ross, we maintain that high quality environmental design, well above current legal minimum standards, leads to more productive and delightful buildings at lower long term cost. Such design needs to be integral from the start: appropriate orientation, insulation and thermal mass are not bolt-on accessories – they need to be designed in from the beginning for permanent effectiveness and best value.

Materials Sourcing

We aim to design and specify materials environmentally appropriate to their specific function, minimising toxicity, embodied energy and ecological impact without dogma. For example, the use of high performance petro-chemically based insulants can be the best environmental solution in a long-life building.

Energy Efficiency

We encourage clients to consider passivhaus design principles, especially for new builds, but we accept that ultimate energy efficiency to zero carbon or carbon-positive standards can not always be a client's primary aim.

Reducing the environmental footprint of the business

While we encourage clients to consider their projects in the wider environmental context and to brief us accordingly, we aim to improve footprints for each project rather expecting to eliminate them.
We take many small practical measures to reduce our own practice footprint in terms of travel, recycling, etc but it is in our project design and management that we can achieve most.
