We aim to provide a pragmatic approach to sustainable design solutions. Passivhaus Designers.

Architectural Design Practice

Main business activities

  • Sustainable construction & low energy design.
  • AECB CarbonLite Energy & Passivhaus Standards.
  • Design & build with partner companies.
  • Contemporary and traditional designs.
  • Traditional & alternative building methods.

Scope of Work

We have procured multi-million pound schemes & as low as £10k. We enjoy working with individual clients & community groups on bespoke projects of interest, providing either a partial or full service, including project management. Our practical approach to design is enhanced by our close working relationship with building company Dales (Contracts) Ltd. & solar thermal & pellet boiler installers Dales Renewables Ltd. to give a complete design & build package if required.

Company philosophy

It is EcoDesign's practice policy to design buildings with as little environmental impact as possible. Our aims are to reduce energy consumption and use low impact construction methods & materials where ever we can. We encourage our clients to learn about and embrace sustainable construction methods. We will often employ new & revive old building techniques to enable simple & pragmatic solutions to be used rather than complicated high-tech techniques & materials.

Materials Sourcing

Our designs use simple, natural and sustainable materials. We responsibly specify FSC certified or locally sourced timbers from managed sources, as well as predominantly lime based mortars and natural insulation materials, when ever practicable. We have been active in supporting the young British wood pellet fuel industry. And we actively encourage local material suppliers to provide a locally sustainable economy.

Energy Efficiency

EcoDesign has championed low energy design for many years using high levels of insulation and airtightness. We have worked closely with contractors to achieve high standards of build and we are now formalising our approach by using the AECB\'s CarbonLite Energy Standards and Peter Wilkinson is now Passivhaus trained. We encourage our clients to embrace rigorous build techniques and post monitoring procedures necessary to prove their buildings are truly energy efficient.

Reducing the environmental footprint of the business

Our small purpose built office is a short walk from home & is particularly well insulated with large South facing windows to provide plenty of natural light and solar gain, & although heated by electricity when needed, we have signed up to a green electric tariff to encourage green electricity.
